The PDAs and GPS adapters that are sold at this website communicate via so called Bluetooth. This is very nice as it allows the GPS unit to be positioned at a different place (e.g. dashboard) as the PDA. However, setting it up requires some steps.

The steps to perform the initial setup are outlined below. We strongly recommend making a backup to an external SD card or the 'iPAQ File Store' using the built in backup utility as all settings are lost when the iPAQ's battery fully drains.

The first step is to ensure that Bluetooth is turned on on the PDA. In order to do this start the 'iPAQ Wireless' application from the start menu.

Once the application has been loaded, click on the Bluetooth icon if it is not already green. The blue light should now start flashing on the iPAQ.

Close the application and select 'settings' from the start menu. Click on the 'Connections' tab and then on the Bluetooth icon.

Next, click on the 'Bluetooth Manager' link.

Once the Bluetooth Manager has loaded, click on the 'New' menu item to add a new bluetooth device.

Make sure the GPS unit is turned on, select 'Explore a Bluetooth device' and click 'Next'.

The system will now discover all Bluetooth devices in the area. The Belkin should be listed as well. When it appears select it and click 'Next'.

To be able to communicate with it, a special pin code will need to be entered. For the Belkin GPS unit the default code is '0000'. Enter it and click 'Ok'.

The system will now check which services the Bluetooth device supports. In case of the Belkin GPS unit the only supported service is 'SPP slave'. Select the service and click 'Next'.

A shortcut will now be created. Click 'Finish' to continue.

'Tap and hold' the created shortcut and select 'Connect'.

A connection is now set up between the PDA and the GPS unit. This is indicated by the blue light being on on the GPS unit. Click the 'X' at the top right of the screen to close the Bluetooth manager.

Start TomTom by clicking on the logo on the 'Today screen'.

TomTom will now be started. If this is the first time you start it some additional screens may be displayed first. Once the map screen is displayed (see below) touch the screen anywhere to go to the menu.

We need to specify which 'COM port' the GPS unit is communicating on. Select 'Change preferences' to navigate to the preferences screen.

Click on the '>' icon until the screen depicted below is displayed. Select 'Show GPS status' to continue.

The GPS Status screen is now displayed. Because we have not yet specified which COM port to use the message 'No GPS device!' will be displayed. Click on 'Configure' to continue.

Click on the '>' button until 'Other Bluetooth GPS' is displayed. Then click 'Select' to continue.

A message is displayed, select 'Continue' to...well....errr..... Continue.

Finally we have reached the screen where we can specify which COM port to use. The two most important lines 'Bluetooth Serial Port...' are truncated. Touch the screen with the stylus or your finger and move it over the options. Do not release until the line containing 'Bluetooth Serial Port COM6:' is displayed.

The screen will now be closed and TomTom should indicate that a GPS device is present. It may take several minutes before the GPS unit gets a 'lock' on all satellites. Once a lock is achieved the current location will be displayed.
